Green Lane Garden

Austin, TX 2020

A typical grass lawn is converted into a processional garden. Three elements: low wall, wisteria trellis, and a long reflecting pool are arranged perpendicular to each other - ordering, and slowing down one’s approach to the home.

The edges of the site are formed into terraced depressions: low spaces that form shelters for planting and for gathering, but also mediate drainage across the otherwise flat site. Bamboo creates a private border along shared property lines.

The axis formed by the low reflecting pool continues into the back courtyard, which is occupied by a larger swimming pool, and generous porch for gathering off of the home’s public rooms.
