Ruiz Residence Renovation

Austin, TX (Under Construction)

One of the unique challenges of Ruiz which CDPA embraced was the desire of the client to phase the construction in three stages while living in the house. Although this might initially introduce logistical inefficiencies as a trade off for financial flexibility, we created a design that has clear boundaries between what is existing and what is new - all the while ensuring that work achieved did not need to be undone later and disruption will be kept to a minimum

Phase 1: Art room garage conversion

Phase 2: Dining Room Renovation

Phase 3: Livingroom and back court

A New central axis was created through all three phases of the new work. This creates a spine of clarity within a type of building campaign that is often marred by subsequent additions not sympathetic to prior work. The spine runs between the new art room in a converted garage of phase 1, through the renovated kitchen and dining room of phase 2, and ultimately into the new living room and social space area of phase 3. On the exterior, these internal spaces are enlivened with adjacent outdoor courtyards and patios.
