Moccasin Canyon

Bastrop County, TX

Moccasin Canyon is a new-build multi-generational residence just east of Austin, Texas. In addition to the practicalities of planning for three generations of family, we wanted to ensure a sense of place within respect to the entire property, not just the house. We positioned the family compound at the crest of the highest point and oriented the housing structures to take advantage of prevailing breezes while minimizing exposure to late afternoon sun.

The primary residential element are clustered around a three-sided courtyard space on a leveled plateau. An adjacent guest house in a lowered, most discrete, level and further downhill on another leveled terrace is a field for fruit trees. From the main road a new gravel drive through the natural prairie offers a resident or visitor a tour across the highly naturalistic landscape.

Our new-build rural project in Central Texas amicably relies on the tradition of settlement patterns in the western united States, clusters of relatively modest buildings linked by covered boardwalks and breezeways situated in an arrangement to create a sense of “place” somewhere that’s never been occupied before. to help ground this desire we used legible building placements stitched together by clear axes and alleyways. Use of conventional materials helps identify the overall concept and keeps costs manageable for the owner/contractor of the property.
