Research - Monesterio Santa Catalina
This research-based student project focused on the mapping of an architectural complex distinguished by its strong material presence and intricate spatial interplay of solid and void. Using the Monasterio de Santa Catalina in Arequipa, Peru, as a case study—an unattributed monastic complex dating back to the 1600s—Cale was tasked with generating a comprehensive existing map that had never before been compiled in a single drawing. Through this work, the project used mapping as a tool of architectural interpretation, examining the monastery’s courts, cloisters, passageways, and cells as a spatial fabric shaped by accretion, enclosure, and inhabitation.
