Our project at Karen addresses a fairly common need of a house: to grow to accommodate the gatherings of an ‘empty nest’ couple needing space for visits for their growing extending family. While the existing spaces at Karen functioned well as a single family house, it lacked a single large social room for events such as birthdays and holidays where many people could collect together.
Our design formally encloses what had been a deck area with a large single space with tall ceilings and ample natural light by day and cozy fireside dinners in the winter. To maximize service and efficiency we introduced a suite of custom designed bookcases and cabinetry that often function both as storage and furniture.
